Relaxation massage therapy at Tavistock Physio Clinics

Relaxation Massage Therapy

A relaxation massage helps de-stress and loosen up your body. It is great for those who have had a hard working week or feel like treating themselves to some TLC!

The treatment consists of flowing strokes, kneading and gentle manipulations of the muscles performed at your chosen pressure. It is a pain-free way to relax both your muscles and your mind. This is also provided at our clinic by Ellie, who has had years of experience performing this type of massage, working in highly  regarded Spas.

Swedish massage

30 minute (back, neck and shoulders), 45 minute (back, neck, shoulders and scalp) or 1 hour (full body) treatment more of a relaxation massage.

Swedish massage is one of the most recognized categories of massage techniques. The main focuses of Swedish massage is to increase blood flow and circulation, to assist in draining the lymphatic system to support immune system function, and to simply create a more relaxed state of being. Unobstructed blood flow and lymph drainage helps to keep the body in good working order and is essential in maintaining the body’s defences against illness and disease.

Indian head massage

30 minutes or 45 minutes treatment.

An extremely effective therapy which has evolved from traditional techniques practiced in India as part of family rituals for over a thousand years. The treatment involves massage to the upper back, shoulders, upper arms, neck, face and scalp; with the client remaining seated in an upright position.

This massage works on specific areas of the body, especially the neck and shoulders where stress affects major muscle groups, hence often immediate relief. Tensions are eased and fibrous knots and nodules deplete. The efficiency of the circulatory and lymphatic system improves, toxins are dispersed from tense muscles and flexibility and fluidity of movement is restored.

Hot & cold stone massage

30 minutes (back neck and shoulders), 45 minute (back, neck, shoulders and glutes), 1 hour (full body) treatment.

The treatment originates in ancient India and China, the traditions and healing rituals included laying the stones in patterns on the body, carrying or wearing the stones for health and protection, using stones in the diagnosis and treatment of disease or during ceremonies such as sweat lodges or in medicine wheels. Some native healers used heated stones to ease the discomforts experienced during menstruation or applied cold stones to impede blood flow after giving birth.

Hot stone massage combines the benefits of hydrotherapy and thermanlism or thermotherapy (the use of heat applications) with massage strokes, using stones to create deep, relaxing and healing treatment.

Using the heat of the stones to warm the skin allows the skin to absorb moisturizing and therapeutic oils, while at the same time preparing the musculature of the body, therefore enable the therapist to work deeper into the muscles.

Note: One stroke of a heated basalt stone is equivalent to five to ten stroke of the therapists’ hand.

Warm bamboo massage

30 minute (back neck and shoulders), 45 minute (back, neck and shoulders and glutes) or 1 hour (full body) treatment.

Warm Bamboo Massage is a beneficial treatment for both the client and the therapist. The warming sensation felt by the client while the sticks glide over the body can slow down respiration to evoke a deeper relaxation to relieve stress, tension and help release endorphins to promote relaxation and reduce pain, leaving the client energised and full of vitality.

The Bamboo sticks are an extension of the therapist’s hands, s/he can perform a deeper tissue massage with less strain on the wrists, hands and shoulders and can take away pressure from the therapists back area allowing her/him to enjoy giving the treatment to her client.

As well as the warm comforting, relaxing feeling a client can feel having a bamboo massage, using the bamboo sticks allows the therapist to penetrate deeper into the underlying tissue to trigger tension points or aid in the breakdown of cellulite in the subcutaneous/connective layer, the bamboo sticks easily mould to the body’s natural contours to give smoother, sleeker looking skin and texture as it improves the circulation and helps with lymphatic drainage to get rid of those cellulite lumps and bumps.

Pregnancy massage

30 minute (back, neck and shoulders) or 1 hour (full body).

A technique involving deep bodywork designed to improve your circulation, take some of the strain off your muscles and joints, and generally re-energize you.

During pregnancy, regular prenatal massages may not only help you relax, but may also relieve insomnia, joint pain, neck and back pain, leg cramping, and sciatica. Additionally, it can reduce swelling in your hands and feet (as long as that swelling isn't a result of preeclampsia), relieve carpal tunnel pain, and alleviate headaches and sinus congestion — all common pregnancy problems. Massage may also lift depression without the use of medication, according to some scientific studies.

Deep tissue massage

30 minutes (back neck and shoulders or legs), 45 minute (back, neck, shoulders and glutes or back of legs), 1 hour (full body) treatment.

A type of massage therapy, deep tissue massage uses deep, slow strokes to reach deeper layers of muscle and fascia (the connective tissue surrounding muscles). It's used for chronic aches and pain and contracted areas such as a stiff neck and upper back, low back pain, leg muscle tightness, and sore shoulders. While some of the strokes may feel the same as those used in Swedish massage therapy, deep tissue massage isn't the same as a regular massage with deep pressure.

Cupping & Moxibustion

Massage Cupping is based on an ancient technique. Cupping can alleviate pain, decrease swelling, increase range of motion in joints and speed up the healing process.  By creating negative pressure above the surface of the tissues, we allow the surface tissue to be lifted upwards and changing the pressure on underlying tissues, such as nerves, capillaries and fascia.

Cupping can be used to stimulate lymphatic flow, decreasing swelling and increasing circulation to injured tissues. At the end of the day participants will leave the seminar armed with an additional useful technique that is non-invasive, painless and effective.

Moxibustion is the technique of burning herbs, Moxa, to create localised heat to help with the loosening of tissues and general relaxation.  It is a technique that is commonly combined with Cupping, although it is can be used separately on its own.

Both Cupping and Moxibustion are commonly used in combination with Acupuncture.
